REVELATIONS
an Illustrated Poem by Marcus Sterling Alleyne
I AM an artist/art collector from the South Side of Chicago. Growing up as a child in the 70s and the early 1980s, I was always passionate about art, especially creating art as a means of conjuring an abstract world where possibilities are endless with an active imagination. I began collecting the art of my peers in the form of flyers we would create to announce parties in hip hop's golden era of hand drawn characters and graffiti style lettering and this became my first introduction to appreciating the value of one's self expression in visual form. Now in my adulthood, art reflects my lifestyle and my belief in a universal order that governs all beings in nature. Art is a means of conveying in an image what may seem impossible to convey through written language. People who have been exposed to the arts are often times more well-rounded individuals and excel in other subjects such as mathematics and science, highly capable of critical thinking, self-reflection, and possessing a broader world perspective and a universal connection to people in general. As a member of Diasporal Rhythms, I hope to educate more individuals about collecting art and its important role in shaping community culture.
“I became a member of Diasporal Rhythms to spread the message that there is an artist community here on the South Side of Chicago and that our work is relevant.” –MSA
I hope you enjoy and share in my passion for all things ART
